Searching for Ms. Philadelphia...

I was born in Philadelphia, a.k.a. "Philly", a.k.a. "Illadelph". I lived in Philly during my early years and spent many summers there when I was growing up in Michigan. Musiq (a fellow Philadelphian and one of the most talented and soulful singers in the music industry) has a song called "Ms. Philadelphia" that has me reminiscing about my birth town, but also thinking about the woman he describes. My favorite part is when he sings, "We spoke forever on topics like religion and politics." I'm definitely feeling that.

Fabolous' new joint with Ne-Yo, "Make Me Better, " expresses what I dream of saying to my wife one day:

I'm a movement by myself
But I'm a force when we're together
Mami I'm good all by myself
But baby you, you make me better

And the line that really resonates with me is when Fabolous says, "I'ma need Coretta Scott, if I'm gonna be King." Powerful stuff.

Ms. Coretta Scott Philadelphia, where are you?

You amaze me! We conversed sometime ago regarding me visiting Charlotte. I often stop by to see what you are blogging about & always find myself intrigued.

You've got me checking my credentials. I can't compare to Coretta but I am trying to get there! When the time comes I’ll be ready for my king!!

Thanks, I needed that.

you bettah wake up and get a real perspective on relationship. what in the world does a rap star and an oversexed r&B singer know about male and female relationships?

gimme a break. there is a consistent naivety between your politics, theology, and views on life.

wake up amigo

Typically, those who speak out of ignorance in the blogosphere chose to remain anonymous. The way you phrase your question speaks to your own prejudice towards hip-hop and r&b. I'm not sure if that prejudice is based on a dislike for the genres themselves or because the art forms are largely created by black folk.

You're question presumes that rap and r&b artists, who are human beings, can not have anything profound to say about love and relationships. Many words could be used to describe Musiq, but oversexed is not one of them. We're not talking about R. Kelly here, but then again even R. Kelly has at times had some really powerful insights on relationships between men and women.

What is it exactly that makes my politics and theology naive in your mind? Please enlighten me.

The Jazztheologian said that he's got a "Ms. Philadelphia" or a modern-day Coretta Scott King. What does she look/act like?
