My (Un)Orthodoxy

I know what its like to lose your religion (like R.E.M.)
I can't say I found it again
Rather, I was found by Him
Or Her as some prefer
That offends my patriarchal sensibility
For we all know God is Father and Son
but, what about Spirit?
Spirit is neither male nor female
which means God is my father and mother
The Word of God is my sister and brother
who just so happened to manifest
in the form of a man named Jesus of Nazareth

When it comes to the Lord's work
I wanna be prodigious
I don't mind if people call me religious
Religious means I try to practice what I preach
There's only one Teacher, but we all have to teach
Too little time and too many souls to reach
Don't always have to quote Scripture
give a sermon or speech
If Christ is the best example
Then maybe I can be a sample

Valerie was right in V for Vendetta
God is in the rain and I'd like to add
Water from heaven makes life a lot better
Maybe that's why I've been baptized twice
One for the Parent, one for the Progeny
Might do it again for the next Person of the Trinity
I'm a bonafied Baptist though that's not all of me

God saved me in a little non-denominational/Pentecostal
church in a Hilton Hotel with a diverse congregation
Understanding the rich complexity of the faith is my mission
There's a lot to be learned from Catholic tradition
and I study with many Christians of the Methodist persuasion
United and African-Episcopal Zion in particular
I've been known to worship with white Prebyterians
who are trying to emerge beyond their "whiteness"
I'm even willing to transcend my "blackness"
Though my heart will always beat
to the sound of the African drum
It's not about escaping our identity
It's about not being bound by it

On the day of Pentecost we were all one in God
If we want to have that kind of unity now
We all have to be a little pentecostal
We have to make room for the Spirit
So we can experience true community
that includes all nations, tongues and colors
No longer divided by party politics
One people indivisible in Jesus Christ
with enough love for those who don't believe as we do
And before I go let me say that I'm not just a Christian
I'm a Christian Jew
