Kirk Franklin's Struggle with Pornography

I heard an interview a few months ago about Kirk Franklin's struggle with pornography. It's yet one more example from the millions throughout the ages that show how we can be gifted servants of God and yet have serious flaws and dark secrets. Thanks to Amin in D.C. who e-mailed the following article to me and has sent several others that I have been able to bring to your attention.

OVERCOMING PORN
Kirk Franklin's Freedom
By Shannon Woodland and Scott Ross
The 700 Club

CBN.com – Kirk Franklin has sold more than 10 million albums in less than 10 years. He's a three-time GRAMMY Award winner and a seven-time Dove Award winner. His hit "Stomp" from the triple-platinum album God's Property made him a star amongst the MTV crowd. But Kirk's career came to a screeching halt a few years ago when his private-or should we say secret-life was no longer a secret. Kirk came clean and confessed his addiction to pornography in this interview with Scott Ross.

KIRK FRANKLIN: There's always the boy who has the big brother who has the magazine under his bed. That's how it starts. So the first time I ever saw one, I was around 8 or 9. I saw my first magazine, and from there I was addicted.

I think this is an important article and interview. Men, particularly Christian men, need to come to terms with this --- not only for themselves, but also for their families. Thanks for sharing.

rod, i'm glad that you posted this one man. it's so easy to look at others and judge their struggles when they are apparent for all to see, but many of us struggle with things ourselves and need to seek God's help instead of pretending that issues don't exist that we might be all the God has ordained us to be.

Particularly moving for me is the fact that EVEN with these personal struggles that Kirk Franklin had God was faithful and just and continued to use him for His glory. To know that every time we mess up, God doesn't leave us and turn His back but continues to speak to and through us; building us up and fulfilling His work is powerful!

Whoops--I accidentally deleted my comments. Here goes:

Franklin raises so many rich and interesting points in this very candid interview! I thought his statement that "The gifted in the church slip right through . . .Nobody's holding the gifted accountable in the Body" was especially insightful. It leads to a question that, at least for me, comes up whenever I hear an artist promoting a sketchy theology, or when I learn about problems in an artist's life: What is the role of the Christian artist? Do we assume that they are a spiritual leader of sorts? Simply a gifted brother or sister whose work we enjoy and learn from? Or a sort of strange hybrid somewhere in the middle (A fellow Christian who is in the spotlight by virtue of his/her gifts, no more or less an example than anyone else?) It's important to think about--and I'd love to hear what others think on this topic.

Also--I think it's so powerful that Franklin's story is one of being powerfully used by God, even though he himself was battling powerful sin. Isn't God good--to use us even as we struggle.

This is something that alot of so-called Christian men deal with, in their marriage more than you can imagine. He help to free more people than he can ever imagine. So often men do not understand so a man thinkness so is he... So although men may think that because I look at porn, it's better than cheating, they are still committing a adulterous act against their spouse. This in fact causes insecurties, non-trust and other points, as well. It can even go a step further, how do you deal with if your spouse not only addicted to porn, but TRANSEXUAL PORN! But then so quick to call other people gay! When they are dealing with the same problem.
